Die Wild Cards TV-Serie sind tatsächlich 2 Serien, die sich beim Streaminganbieter HULU (Report der Magd) in Vorbereitung finden. Martin trägt, neben Melinda Snodgrass, den Titel des Executive Producers, aber da er vertraglich an HBO und Game of Thrones gebunden ist, darf er grundsätlich nicht viel für die Wild Cards tun – ebenso, wie er nicht an Nightflyers beteiligt war.

UPDATE 01: 09.03.2017: Wie GRRM auf seinem Blog verkündet hat, bringt TOR weitere 9 (!!) Bände heraus. Als Hardcover. 5 der Bände sind Neuauflagen alter, längst vergriffener Editionen, die Bände 8-12. Band 8 und 9 werden dabei erweitert. Band 27 wird eine Sammlung all der Solo-Storys, die derzeit extra als eBooks erhältlich sind. Details rückt GRRM laufend raus, sobald es mehr davon gibt.
26.02.2017: Seit nun 30 (!) Jahren ist George R.R. Martin der kreative Geist und führende Herausgeber der von ihm une einer Gruppe befreundeter Autoren erdachten Wild Cards, seit etlichen Jahren unterstützt durch Melinda Snodgrass. Die Serie hat sich aus dem Rollenspiel dieser Gruppe entwickelt, zu der Martin, Snodgrass, Victor Milan und andere gehörten.
Nach all den Jahren und mehreren Verlagswechseln – die Serie startete bei Bantam Books, wechselte ein paar Jahre später zu Bean Books, gefolgt von ibooks Inc – ist das Projekt nun endgültig bei TOR beheimatet, die den Zyklus von Beginn an neu rausbringen, und das Universum der Wild Cards ausbauen. So wurden die alten Bände um Kapitel erweitert und ergänzt, es gibt eBook-only Geschichten, Comics, und nicht zuletzt eine eigene, sehr umfangreiche Website für die Wild Cards.
Alles in allem ist die Serie auch nach all den Jahren noch immer ungeheuer populär. So wurden erst 2016 zusätzlich auch die Fernsehrechte verkauft – ob jetzt eine Serie daraus wird oder das Projekt scheitert ist eine ganz andere Angelegenheit, die nichts mit der Popularität der Wild Cards zu tun hat.
Hinzu kommen die Wild Card Storys. Das sind Erzählungen von Wild Cards Autoren, die als ergänzend zu den Moasaikromanen als eBooks erscheinen.
Die Bücher selbst sind großteils Mosaikromane – mehrere Autoren schreiben ihre Stoffe, die zerlegt und ineinander verflochten werden und so einen kompletten Roman ergeben. Damit ist Wild Cards zugleich eine extrem Ausprägung einer Shared World, ausgedehnter ein Shared Universe, ein Multiversum – angesiedelt in einer alternativen Zeitgeschichte unserer Welt, in der es durch den Eingriff von Ausserirdischen zur Entstehung der Wild Cards kam – Menschen mit Superkräften, die vielfältiger und unberechenbarer kaum sein können. Eine sehr komplexe Angelegenheit, will man das unter Kontrolle halten, aber unendlich in den Möglichkeiten des Wachsens und der Alternativen.
Wild Cards wurden und werden in etlichen Sprachen übersetzt herausgebracht, darunter auch in deutsch. Nahm sich zu Beginn der Heyne Verlag des Zyklus an, um nach einigen wenigen Bänden aufzugeben (was bei Heyne nicht selten passiert, leider), so ist die Serie seit kurzer Zeit bei Penhaligon in Arbeit.
Dort sind einige Bände erschienen, darunter die erweiterten Neuausgaben der ersten Wild Cards Bücher. Aber auch Penhaligon scheint eher eine unglückliche Strategie zu fahren. Dass man frühe und spätere Bände willkührlich veröffentlicht, ist noch das geringste Problem. Immerhin hat ja GRRM selbst erwähnt, dass es keine fixe Lese-Chronologie gibt. Auch die Sub-Zyklen sind nicht bindend, eignen sich eher zum Einstieg in die Serie.
Aber andere Dinge sind ärgerlich. Zum einen erscheint die Nummerierung von Penhaligon irritierend – der vorgebliche Bd. 3 ist der tatsächliche Band 20, der ist der 3. Roman einer Trilogie innerhalb der gesamten Serie (der Buchrücken hingegen suggeriert in seiner Beschriftung mit einer riesigen 3 schlicht und ergreifend den Bd. 3 der Gesamtserie). Auch die Serie in Generationen zu unterteilen trägt nicht gerade zur Übersichtlichkeit bei. Zum anderen weicht man nach wenigen Bänden sowohl von der einheitlichen Covergestaltung wie auch vom Format ab, so werden jetzt Blanvalet Taschenbücher herausgebracht und die Paperbacks verschwinden. Sehr bedauerlich.
